Chan.nel Karama For Women Who Are Going Places, 8/01/2010

by Marie Denee

Full Figured Fashion Week™ breakout designer, LaToya Skinner stole the opening night's show with her innovative and evocative collection inspired by Grace Jones.  This San Francisco-based designer created Chan.nel Karama, for Women who are going places.  Not for the faint of heart, Chan.nel Karama's latest collection boasts body-conscious dresses and leggings paired with impeccably detailed and structured jackets.

This self-taught designer started fashioning looks for herself at the tender age of fourteen with the guidance of her aunt, who was a tailor.  After falling in love with fashion magazines and it's ability to transform fashion into an aesthetically pleasing and thought provoking piece of art, Skinner knew at a young age, her calling.  Beyond looking at beautiful pieces of clothing, she felt compelled to create it, knowing that "great clothing that you love makes you feel great."

A renaissance woman in the making, Skinner immersed herself in the fashion world, holding positions from fashion journalism, wardrobe styling, production, apparel, and graphic design.  With these influences, Skinner sharpened and honed her skills, which led her to the launch of Chan.nel Karama in 2004.

Drawing from her own her own personal style and fashion perspectives when designing, Skinner shares "Being myself is a must and I don't feel the same way every day.  So my personal style is sporadic and almost a bit schizophrenic.  Some days I want jeans and a t-shirt, then the next day I want something a bit more edgy or formal.  I just make sure she can relate to at least one piece in each collection."

Chan.nel Karama is a fusion of street and couture- drawing from past inspirations of vintage cuts and shapes juxtaposed against the gritty and sexy influences of the Hip Hop culture.  This fashion influence, Skinner credits to the cultural diversity of San Francisco, a place that no one that has yet highlighted from a designer perspective.

The collection, currently sold on her Chan.nel Karama Esty shop, will be available on her new website launching this Fall.  Believing in size inclusion and that every woman's body is beautiful, Chan.nel Karama caters to a variety of shapes and sizes from a zero to a 22, with custom tailoring available for the confident plus size woman.
