The Basics of Denim    


Denim, denim, denim... We ALL love denim!!!


Jeans are one of the most versatile, core pieces we have in our wardrobes, and since we have so many choices, it is important to know the basics of wearing the perfect pair of jeans that work for YOU, to ensure that you keep your body shape in proportion and your curves in all the right places.

Here is a quick recap of some of my basic wardrobe logic that you have all heard me talk about before and is essential when choosing all clothing, especially denim, which is a basic core item and wardrobe staple.

 

1. Choose the Right Size- With ALL garments, wearing the right size can make or break your look.  Make sure to try on a few different sizes, in order to determine which works best for you, keeping in mind that manufacturer sizing varies.  Wearing jeans that are too small will create the well known and very unflattering "muffin top", which is hard to disguise, even with a shaper.  On the other hand, jeans that are too baggy will instantly make you look larger and create gaps in certain areas.  Denim that fits correctly should hug your curves in all the right places and tuck in your problem areas.  If you find the right pair of jeans, but find you are in between sizes, consider buying them in the larger size and having them altered.  This is a very simple and inexpensive way to create custom fit denim.  Also, consider that if the denim has stretch to it, you may need to choose a size smaller, so that they will stretch to fit as you wear them and not become "baggy and saggy".


2. Choose the Right Style- Not all denim styles are appropriate for all body types, so find the best styles that work for you, and stick to it! Do not waist your time, money, and closet space on different trends and silhouettes that are ill fitting and uncomfortable.  Here are some tips to remember for specific body types: 


Pear Shapes- If you are a pear shape, choose denim with a lower rise that will sit on your hips and will eliminate the "waist gap" at your lower back.  Boot cut styles are helpful in creating balance in your silhouette.  Also, because pear shapes have larger bottoms, avoid wearing denim that has back slat pockets and small or embroidered back pockets.  These types of pockets are common in junior plus denim styles and they can make your bottom appear bigger.
