When did you decide you wanted to be a plus model?I decided
that I wanted to be a plus model about 4 years ago. But my
inspiration to become a plus model started in the mid to late 90's when
I was watching a show on E! I remember running into the kitchen,
grabbing my mom, and taking her to the TV. I said Momma, it's a
big lady like me! This woman was Emme. She was my first
glimpse of a plus size model and from then on, the idea stayed in my
mind. I began to go to local model and talent searches...where I heard NO
repeatedly. Eventually my mom and I stopped going to
them. While in college, I got a call from my grandmother
telling me to put it on America's Next Top Model. (Yes, my granny was
watching Tyra Banks' new show) and I was introduced to this beautiful
image of a woman named Toccara. Then, in 2005, I saw Sharon Quinn
grace the stage on Monique's Fat Chance. From then on, I began to
research the world and markets of plus modeling planning to make my
move as soon as I graduated from college.
Who are your favorite curvy role models? My favorite curvy
role models are Marilyn Monroe, Dorothy Dandridge, Sharon Quinn, Dita
Von Teese, Queen Latifah, Emme, Crystal Renn, Barbara Brickner, Mia
Amber, Tyra Banks, Oprah, and Jennifer Hudson. I really admire
the strength of Jennifer Hudson. She seems to be a woman of great
resilience and her talents are amazing.
If you could pick the perfect plus modeling campaign for yourself, who would you want to work for?
I would love to work for Ambi Skin Care, My Black is Beautiful,
Covergirl Cosmetics, Dove's Campaign for Real Women, Old Navy, Ashley
Stewart, Evans London, Vaseline, E-Spirit, Hips & Curves,
Curvation, Just My Size, Igigi, Kiyonna, PZI Jeans, Gatorade, and
Champion Sportswear.
What are your dreams, desires, and goals a plus model?
My ultimate dream, desire, and goal is to be as great of an inspiration to someone as other have been to me.
Name your favorite store to shop for curvy clothes in your hometown.
Growing up in a small town and being a size 12/14 since junior high,
left me with not many places to shop. I wore a lot of dresses and
athletic gear. But as I've grown, I've learned of many different styles
of clothing. Here in Philadelphia, I do most of my curvy girl
shopping at a boutique named Nikki London. The owner has pieces
from full business suites, kimonos, and designer dresses to jeans,
t-shirts, handbags, and jewelry. It's a Must See and Shop place
of Philadelphia.
