When did you decide you wanted to be a plus model?
In the spring of 2004, I read an advertisement in a local newspaper for women interested in attending a class for "plus modeling" at a local Barbizon School for modeling in New Jersey. I thought about it for a few days and then decided to call for more information. Although I had a full-time career as a registered nurse, I felt strongly that modeling was something that I wanted to do. I called, after much contemplation, to set up an interview with the staff at the Barbizon School, after which I started the three month Intro to Modeling class. During these three months I learned runway techniques, appearance, makeup, basic acting skills and closed with a photoshoot for headshots. I learned so much in this short time, and felt that it was something I would like to pursue in the very near future. Due to an illness of a close family member, I put this idea of modeling on hold; somehow it was no longer a priority. In 2007, I started thinking about searching for a photographer in NY that would shoot plus size models. My online search led me to Madeline Figueroa-Jones and her well-known photographer husband Luke Jones, also known as "Lucas Pictures". After my second shoot I felt more confident and submitted my photos to a local model and talent agency in NJ. I was called in for an interview, was signed, and given my comp cards.
Who are your favorite curvy role models?
I would have to say my favorite curvy role model is Emme. She has had a tremendous impact with regard to increasing the plus size woman's self esteem and more. In the 1990's she was featured in Mode Magazine; which I found very interesting. Emme is one of my favorite curvy role models because of her great impact on the business of plus modeling. She was the one model that I would frequently see in advertisements and magazines. During the past two years, Madeline Figueroa-Jones has made the largest impact on my life. Since I began my search for a photographer and started chatting with her via e- mail, I realized that Maddy is a genuine and caring person who has shared her knowledge and expertise with me. Her guidance at my first two photoshoots helped me to be more comfortable in front of the camera. Mia Amber Davis would be another curvy role model that has inspired me. As my stylist for these two photoshoots, she has guided me in choosing appropriate clothing that flatters my body type. She always reminds me that self esteem is very important, and to become comfortable with my body because it is reflected in the pictures.
