On a glorious star filled evening at NYC's famed South Street Seaport
in the shadow of the world famous Brooklyn Bridge I had the pleasure of
attending The Glamazon's triumphant standing room only return to the
New York Stage in the debut of their new show, "America's Got Back
Fat!" at Spiegelworld.
We all remember how proud we were to see the glamorous ones as they
competed as finalists in the 2007 season of NBC's hit talent showcase,
"America's Got Talent" but some fans of the show weren't as impressed
with The Glamazons' bountiful beauty. One disgruntled viewer
created their own blog titled, "America's Got Back Fat" referring to
the zaftig beauties but our Glamazons turned that negative energy
around creating a stage show of the same name.
During the roughly 60 minute performance, The Glamazon's, comprised of
founder, Meryl "Lady " Finger, Laura "Caramella" Johnson, Sandy
"Candy Apple" May and Sarah "Ginger Snap" Orr took turns
reading fan mail (the good, the bad and the just plain weird) and
belting out 18 mostly up tempo numbers such as fan favorites "Shakit"
and "Lady Marmalade" as well as original music like "Little Sister" and
a not so family friendly remake of "Joyful Joyful" from the film,
"Sister Act 2." The ladies also took us on a behind the
scenes look at their performance on "America's Got Talent" as well as
the harrowing yet hilarious six week stint they had in Branson Missouri
immediately following AGT.
As someone who has witnessed The Glamazon's growth over the past few
years I must say that the chemistry these ladies share on stage is
amazing. Watching from the audience as the group showcased tight
harmonies, slick choreography and a genuine since of camaraderie made
me root even harder for their success.
The entertainment industry is full of mainstream America's beauty
ideals but as a proud member of the plus community I have my own.
The Glamazon's represent confidence, charisma, sex appeal, glamour,
tenacity, strength and friendship. To me they epitomize beauty.
