We are all well aware of the damage that too much sun exposure can
have on our skin, but did you know about what it can do to you hair?
While I agree that hair itself is technically dead, we color it,
process it and sometimes even abuse it! So if we are going to spend all
of this money on making it beautiful, why not take a few extra steps to
ensure that it stays beautiful longer?
Signs of sun damaged hair:
• faded color
• dry and split ends
• frizzy hair
• weakened hair
Protect & Repair
• Using a shampoo and conditioner with sunscreen may
not make sense, as you rinse out these products, but using ones that
repair damage is a good idea.
Try: John Masters Organics Honey & Hibiscus Hair Reconstructing Shampoo & Conditioner. Linolenic and hyaluronic acids, abundant in youthful hair, are combined with soy and wheat proteins to repair damaged hair.
• A leave-in conditioner helps to keep your hair
hydrated and protected while you are swimming at the beach or the pool.
Try: Frederic Fekkai Marine Summer Hair Beach-Comber Leave-in Conditioner.
Packed with marine nutrients to infuse deep hydration into sun-exposed,
moisture-thirsty hair and the UV shield helps prevent color fading.
• Use deep conditioning treatments weekly.
Try: Ouidad Deep Treatment Intensive Conditioner.
Saturate your hair with this treatment, cover with a shower cap and
heat it with a blow dryer, for 12 minutes. Then let it cool completely
for another 10, and rinse it out using your regular conditioner to
loosen it up.
Tip: Comb your conditioners through with a wide toothed comb while in the shower.
• Use a hair sealant or shine product.
Try: J-Life Heat Shield with UV Protectors.
Protects hair with UV blockers and heat blockers that coat the hair
shaft before straightening the hair. They tested this with up to 400
degrees heat, which is common in flat irons. Use this anytime you
straighten or blow-dry your hair.
• Clarify I always use a clarifying shampoo once a
week or so. This helps to remove product build up. Try: Neutrogena
Anti-Residue Shampoo. Will remove 90% of build up and dullness.
• Hats & scarves Covering up with a stylish
straw hat or scarf will both make you look adorable and keep your hair
shielded from the sun!
