Meet Jennifer Jonassen
The casting call read:
PIRATE/NINJA/SYNCHRONIZED SWIMMER/MEXICAN WRESTLER
Male and Female, ages 21-50, good movers and strong personality. Sense
of rhythm and coordination. Trained dancers preferred but not
necessary. STRONG sense of ensemble. Will be performing in club....
And somehow I knew I was supposed to submit myself! Now please bear in
mind that I am not a trained dancer and at present I still weigh way
over 300 pounds. But I have always been something of a daredevil so I
pressed send and submitted myself online to the casting director. And I
honestly didn't think I would hear back...
Lo and behold they called! And during our interview I was asked which
role I'd like to play. And to my great surprise I heard the words:
SYNCHRONIZED SWIMMER coming out of my mouth.
Now you'd think it'd be enough for me to just be dancing in public but
now I had signed on to do so in a swimming suit! And a white swimming
suit at that! They took my measurements and told me they would build me
an old fashioned type of suit. I was skeptical and insecure. But
I went to the rehearsals and kept pinching myself. Most everyone there
were professional dancers though there were also one or two other actor
types as well.
On the day we were scheduled to perform, I still had not tried on the
bathing suit. I was certain it would be disastrous. But I emerged from
the dressing room feeling every bit like Esther Williams and I gotta
tell you all that there is something undeniably powerful about dancing
in a bathing suit in front of an audience! If you ever get the chance
to do it I say grab it! And if you want a chance to see me do it
I will be performing again this October 4th and in December as well at
The Echoplex in Echo Park with the R.A.I.D. Dance troupe led by Ramie
Becker! (R.A.I.D. stands for Random Acts of Irreverent Dance.) I can
guarantee great music and a fun night of dancing like no one is
watching!
